We love having plants, flowers, and trees but we aren’t quite ready to landscape yet. If you’re in the same boat we have a tip for you!
When you need a large, cheap planting container but don’t want to pay the large prices, plastic tubs are a great solution. They’re not only a great price, but the rope handles make them easy to move around.
These tubs are often used as a laundry basket, or to store toys in. But we like to use these tubs to plant trees, berries, and flowers in. These tubs are especially a smart choice for our trees and berries to be in until we are ready to plant them in the ground permanently.
We found these 17 gallon plastic rope handle tubs at Walmart for around $5-7. You can also find them on Amazon. You could spend at least $40 for a planter this size. So we were happy to find a cheap alternative.
How to use rope handle tubs as planting containers
These 17 gallon tubs are the perfect size for planting containers. All we need to do is put holes in them for drainage. We used a large plastic nursery container that the tree came in as a pattern for the holes. And with a 5/8″ drill bit we drilled 6 holes around the bottom outer edge using the pattern as a guide.
With a 1″ drill bit we drilled 3 bigger holes across the bottom of the tub.
Then we just filled with dirt about half way. Put the tree in and filled with dirt the rest of the way.
Try using these plastic tubs with rope handles when you need a large, cheap planting container but don’t want to pay the large prices.
