A good 16” steel head claw hammer is able to take care of most jobs you’ll do. This is a good general purpose hammer. We prefer an all-steel hammer with a shock reduction grip. Get whatever feels right to you. You may want to include a small tack hammer for small jobs. But this hammer will be your go to for just about anything.
2. Cordless drill/driver
A cordless drill/driver gun will be really handy to have for installing shelves, closet systems, hanging pictures, a multitude of jobs. It will definitely be worth getting. You don’t need to spend a lot of money but there are some valuable features to look for: a powerful motor, at least 12 volt battery, and of course some drill bits of various sizes. Make sure to get drill and driving bits.
3. Screwdriver set
It is always good to have a set of screwdrivers to do quick jobs with. You’ll want to have a Phillips screwdriver (+), and a flat head (-)screwdriver. You will use these over and over.
4. Tape measure
The tape measure is what we always seem to be hunting for. So this is a must-have, just make sure you put it back in the toolbox so you can find it when you need it. A 16-25 ft. tape measure should work just fine.
You’ll need a level for hanging pictures, installing shelves, framing a wall, just about everything. A 12 inch level will be fine for the house. You’ll need larger ones, like 4 foot or longer, for more intense projects.
They come with our without lasers. Get one that’s durable, magnetic, has a laser, and is easy to read.
6. Carpenter’s square
It’s a handy measuring tool you’ll use a lot. It’s not square in shape but it will help you make sure things line up in a perfect square.
7. Staple gun
Look for one that is all steel, jam-resistant, and has a comfortable grip.
8. Plier set
Your plier set should include a pipe wrench and adjustable wrench and slip joint channel lock. You’ll need these for working on pipes and drains.
9. Utility knife
Look for one that stores the blades in the handle and is easily retractable.
Extras you should include are a roll of masking tape and double stick tape and a pencil.
